Handmade Jewelry coming in the not so distant future. It is my hope to have items listed on my Etsy page by December 2011.
- Thanks for the support
So after a month of cramming in as much Earring making as possible, the 2012 Metis Fest has come and gone. For those of you that don’t know this was my first event selling my Earrings.I would just like to start out by thanking my mom for her help with getting everything ready for the event, I could not have done it without her, and she was a great help at the event running my table while I assisted in the kids craft tent. Thanks again Mom.
I want to thank everyone that came out to the event, it was a great success, I know that myself and the the rest of the staff at the Metis Local 1935 were happy to have you all out. I appreciate all of the kind words that you all expressed to my mom, it’s always encouraging to hear that people appreciate your work. Your kindness makes what I do worth it in the end.
For those of you that expressed an interest in a custom pair please send me an e-mail at kaleenaalexandra@gmail.com, or you can leave a comment on here and I will get into contact with you.
Some great tips I took away from the Metis Fest:
1. I am going to look into buying gift boxes to put the Earrings in. I was hoping to have these but it was a last minute decision to do the festival.
2. I am going to look into trade shows and other events in the future.
3. I am going to make some smaller Earrings as some of the younger students said they would like to see some smaller ones that don’t look too huge on their ears, I definitely think this is a great idea.
4. I heard a few suggestions that I teach a class or do some sort of seminar on earring making, I would be interested in doing this at some point in the future, but for the time being I don’t think that will be possible, I have a few too many things on the go at the moment.
For those that had questions I would like to clear a few things up; my feathers are from Canadian Birds, my boyfriend hunts a fair amount and that was what got me into earring making in the first place, it seemed like a waste not to use the feathers for something. Every pair of Earrings is unique I make a point not to duplicate anything, so you won’t see the same pair twice. I hand pick and select the feathers myself, and the majority of the beads are from recycled jewelry, no need to waste. The earring findings are silver plated, they are not anything special, but I assure you this part of the earring is not recycled nor has it been warn before. If you have any other questions do not hesitate to ask. I look forward to seeing you all out in the future, once again Thank you.
- Metis Fest Tomorrow
For those of you that don’t know I will be selling my Earrings at the Metis Fest held by the Fort McMurray Metis Local 1935. I have prepared about fifty pairs of Original one of a kind Earrings to sell at the event and prices will range from 20 to 30 dollars depending on the size. Any pairs that don’t get sold tomorrow will be put up on to my Etsy for sale to the public. I will try to post some pics of my new creations sometime this weekend. Thank you all so very much for your support, hope to see you out at the Metis Fest tomorrow. The event is held from 9 am to 4 pm at the Metis Local grounds. Park at the Fort McMurray Sawridge and catch a shuttle over. There will be lots of activities, food, games and entertainment. Best part is its free! - Current projects
So I haven’t been on here with an update in a while, so I suppose it’s about time for one. I have decided to be a crafter in the upcoming Metis Fest being put on by Fort McMurray Metis Local 1935. The event will be taking place on May 25th at the Metis Local grounds here in Fort McMurray Alberta from 9 am to 4 pm.
The Fort McMurray Metis Local 1935 is a not-for-profit organization based in Fort McMurray that has a growing membership of over 200 people. They are very involved in promoting the Metis way of life to the community and the Metis Fest is a great way to showcase Metis culture.
Métis means a person who self-identifies as a Métis, is distinct from other aboriginal peoples, is of historic Métis Nation ancestry, and is accepted by the Métis Nation.
For more information on the Metis Nation of Alberta visit their website.
There are three reasons why I am excited to be a part of this festival:
1. I get an opportunity to sell my designs to the public in a friendly and fun setting. (Well I volunteered my mom to sit at my table and sell my earrings)
2. I am a Metis person and am always proud of my heritage.
3. I am an employee at the Metis Local 1935, In March I joined the staff at the Metis Local 1935 as the administrative assistant for oil and gas. It is a truly rewarding position and I am happy to go to work everyday, which is an odd thing for most people.
Now on to the fun part, my latest creations, I have been working on creating a number of new unique pairs of earrings, and reworked a few of the old pairs to sell at the festival. The more I work at it, the more creative my designs become. If I don’t sell a single pair of earrings, at the very least it’s an opportunity to get my name out in the community, I have a pile of business cards ready and am working on some promotional items.
My goal for this week is to continue making earrings, at least five pairs a day, and to do a couple photo shoots. Expect some fun photos by the end of the week, I’m working on recruiting a few models for this part.
- Etsy Items
So after a fair amount of work and finally having some days off I have managed to get a decent amount of earrings made up in the past couple days. The majority of them have been put up on my Etsy. For those of you that are new to my site and are in to social networking, I highly suggest you follow me on twitter @madebyKaleena or like me on facebook. I truly do appreciate all of the love and support given to me from my family and friends I could not do it without you.
My Earrings are made with 100% hand-picked feathers, the vast majority of which are from birds my boyfriend and I have hunted ourselves, the peacock feathers are from a farm belonging to a family friend.
I enjoy creating things that people enjoy wearing as much as I enjoy making them.Yesterday I went out in town wearing a pair of Peacock Earrings I made, I had at least 5 random people tell me how much they loved my earrings and a number of others admiring them, or so my boyfriend pointed out. Whether I sell one pair or one hundred pairs does not really matter to me, I enjoy this as a hobby and in the end I end up with some awesome earrings that I can keep for myself if no one else wants them.
I will attempt to continue to update this site as my earrings come up if I forget just keep checking out my facebook and Etsy. Thanks for stopping in, hope you enjoy what I do.
- Peacock Feather Earrings!
Spent the day making some more earrings, peacocks and snow geese were my main area of inspiration. I added a few of them to my etsy, the remainder will be added tomorrow. Hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
